Sixth formers from Theale Green Community School recently took part in their annual Question Time event. The theme was ‘The Environment’ and the panel of four was made up of Professor David Wilson, a visiting Professor at Imperial College, London Independent Waste and Resources Management Consultant; Richard Benyon, Minister of State for Agriculture and Fisheries; Lizzie Carlyle, Head of Environmental Practices at the National Trust and Alok Sharma MP for Reading West.

They answered questions from the students on a wide range of environmental topics including: how we ensure global cooperation on the reduction of emissions, how we combat over population, economic growth and the hot topic, nuclear power.

The panel and students had a lively debate over what the most pressing issues are and how we go about addressing these problems. This was a great opportunity for the students to have some real answers from experts and also to make the students question their behaviour in terms of impact on the environment.

The event, now in its third year, is one which gives the students the opportunity to question key people involved in the industry and politics. Simon Shelley, Theale Green’s Director of Sixth Form believes this event is a fundamental part of sixth form life; he said, “Question Time gives us an excellent opportunity for our young people to put questions to experts and people in positions of influence about their concerns on environmental issues”

The Head Team who helped organise the event summed up, "The students really enjoyed the experience; we all thrived in the formality of the event, and the combined knowledge of the panel. It was a great success!"

Chairing the event for the second year was Head Teacher, Sue Marshall said, “Question Time engages sixth formers in a lively and relevant discussion about important issues for our society. This year’s theme of the environment drew out a range of opinions and I was very impressed by the questions the students asked and by the thoughtfulness of the comments they made.”

One of the panellists, Local MP Alok Sharma said: “I was absolutely delighted to take part in this debate and I was extremely impressed by the knowledge of Theale Green students about environmental issues. The debate proved to be very thought provoking and it is great to see the pupils focused on such important issues.”

The event which took place on March 9th coincided with filming for the BBC’s School report week which saw students filming part of the event and interviewing the panellists. For full coverage please follow this link: http://www.thealegreen.org.uk/news/BBC2012.php
