Alok Sharma joined volunteers from the Reading branch of the national charity Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help (SSAFA Forces Help) as they manned a fund raising stall at Morrisons on Rose Kiln Lane in Whitley on Saturday 13 February. SSAFA also ran a stall at the Co-Op in Tilehurst and collectively raised £604.54 at the two locations.

SSAFA supports past and present British Armed Forces personnel as well as their families, helping more than 50,000 people each year. The charity, through its trained volunteer caseworkers, provides a range of help and advice to former service personnel including help for those with needs for equipment or home development; financial assistance in association with other charities and benevolent funds; emotional support for the lonely, ill or bereaved and general non-judgemental and friendly advice.

The assistance offered by SSAFA to serving personnel and their families includes healthcare and social work; a registered adoption agency; additional needs and disability advice; holidays for children with additional needs and confidential advice and support.

Alok Sharma said: “SSAFA does absolutely fantastic work in supporting our brave service men and women and their families and I am full of admiration for all the SSAFA volunteers who give up so much of their time to help others. I was very happy to support this local fundraising event and, as ever, the people of Reading gave generously to a very deserving charity.”

Pam Reynolds, who works as a SSAFA volunteer in the Reading office located at Brock Barracks, organised the fund raiser and said: “Many thanks to Morrisons and the Co-Op for letting us set up stalls in their stores and thanks also to all those who made a donation. Every donation, large or small, makes a real difference to our work of supporting our current and former service personnel and the money raised will be used specifically to support the work of SSAFA in the Reading and district area. If anyone wants to know more about SSAFA or is interested in volunteering, please visit our website www.ssafa.org.uk.”
