Alok Sharma, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Reading West, gave his backing to local fair-trade start-up Pro Social Trading Limited which trades under the brand name Kwe Kwe.

The brainchild of Reading community leader Tim Clewer, the business manufactures pet beds in Zimbabwe which are then shipped to the UK and sold on the UK market. Kwe Kwe has provided fairly paid employment for many people in the Zimbabwean town of Kwe Kwe, after which the business is named.

Unemployment rates currently stand at over 75% in Zimbabwe and food shortages for families outside the capital Harare are commonplace. Kwe Kwe’s primary aim is to provide employment and opportunity for everyday Zimbabweans. Any profits made by the company are injected back into a range of local community development projects in Zimbabwe.

Alok Sharma said: “This is a great initiative by Tim Clewer and his colleagues. Zimbabwe has seen some very troubled times in recent years and Kwe Kwe is helping to provide much needed employment. Kwe Kwe offers a range of attractive products and I wish the business every success for the future.”

Business director Tim Clewer commented: “We received our first big shipment from Zimbabwe recently and we are finding that there is a lot of interest in our products with purchasers appreciating the employment we are able to offer to the townsfolk of Kwe Kwe. If anyone has any interest in our products or learning more about us, please visit our website at www.kwekwe.org.”
