Jeremy Hunt MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, visited the Reading West constituency on Friday 13 November.
Jeremy Hunt met at the Madejski Stadium with local Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Alok Sharma, Reading Borough and West Berkshire councillors, business organisations and representatives of Reading Football Club, including Sir John Madejski, to learn about the work being done to promote sport and culture in the local community and the area’s ambitions to act as a venue or team base during the 2012 Olympic Games. Business organisations represented at the meeting included the Federation of Small Businesses, Thames Valley Economic Partnership, Chamber of Commerce and Reading CIC.
Following the visit Jeremy Hunt said: “I was pleased to visit Reading and learn more about the work being done to promote sport in the community, especially amongst the young, and also about local Conservative plans to promote Reading as a team base ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games. Reading’s location so close to London and its good transport links make the town an ideal potential base and a strong connection with the 2012 Games will undoubtedly help the local economy at the time.”
Jeremy Hunt continued: “It was a real pleasure to also meet Sir John Madejski and representatives of Reading Football Club to hear about all the excellent work the Club is doing with local schools through its Community Trust, especially the initiatives to promote social inclusion and boost young people’s engagement with school work through their involvement in football. It is absolutely clear that Reading Football Club is having a very positive influence in the wider community and Sir John deserves huge credit for all his hard work and commitment to the Club and to Reading.”
Alok Sharma added: “Reading is an aspirational town, full of hard working people and this came across very clearly in the discussion Jeremy had with the range of local representatives present at the meeting. I very much hope that some of the ideas raised to promote Reading as a 2012 location can be achieved and initiatives which help to boost the town’s profile and local economy should be welcomed.”
