Reading based amateur dramatics group the Sainsbury Singers, founded by local man Frank Sainsbury in 1938, is urgently looking to raise £5,000 from sponsors and corporate patrons by the start of June to allow the Group to put on its autumn performance of the musical Chess.

The Sainsbury Singers group, which is a registered charity, put on two performances a year at the Hexagon with cast members drawn from local Reading residents and local school children with an interest in the performing arts.

In 2003 the Sainsbury Singers started a children's theatre group, Kidz Alive!, to encourage local school children to become involved in the theatre. Kidz Alive! meets once a month on a Saturday afternoon in the Grange Church Hall in Southcote.

The Sainsbury Singers are currently rehearsing for their next show, Blitz, which will be performed on 5 - 9 May at the Hexagon with one of the day's of the show falling rather appropriately on the anniversary of VE Day on 8 May.

Alok Sharma, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Reading West, who attended a rehearsal of Blitz! on 22 April to demonstrate his support for the group said: "Local voluntary groups such as the Sainsbury Singers play a big role in nurturing young acting and singing talent and helping school children to gain in self-confidence by taking part in public performances. Having celebrated their 70th birthday last year it would be real a shame if the Sainsbury Singers had to cancel their autumn show because of a lack of funding. I know that right now we are all facing a very tough time financially but I would encourage any companies or individual sponsors who are keen to support local amateur theatre to get in touch with the group."

Brian Bretney, Treasurer of the Sainbury Singers added: "We have already raised over £3,000 to help fund our autumn performance of Chess and are looking to raise another £5,000 from outside sponsors. We would like to thank all the members of the Reading public who have attended and supported our past performances at the Hexagon and of course one of the ways local people can help us raise funds for future shows is by attending our performances of Blitz! All the adults and children in the cast have been rehearsing hard and we can promise the audience a really fun and energetic show filled with many hit songs!"
