With local post offices in Reading under threat, Alok Sharma the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate in Reading West and local Southcote campaigner Alan Hawkins orgaised and delivered to 10 Downing Street a local petition signed by hundreds of people across Southcote, Tilehurst and Purley calling on the Labour Government to reconsider its plans to close local post offices. Across the country Gordon Brown plans to close 2,500 local post offices from the network by 2009.

However thanks to the people of Southcote, who demonstarted the strength of local feeling by signing the community wide petition, Coronation Square post office has been saved from the current round of proposed Labour cuts!

Alok commented: "We believe that Coronation Square plays a vital role in the community and is an essential life line for many people, especially the elderly. I am delighted at the outcome of our campaign and a big thank you to everyone who signed the petition. Through this petition local Southcote people have demonstrated that if we work together we can achieve success for our local communities."
