Reading Conservatives have expressed outrage at Labour plans to sneak through massive increases in some short to medium stay car park charges across Reading without going through proper scrutiny.
Several car parks which are currently free would have charges introduced. A few long stay charges would be reduced. For example a 2-3 hour stay at Queens Road or Civic Centre "B" car park would increase from £3.60 to £4.50, a 25% increase; a 7 hour stay at Kings Meadow, Hills Meadow or the Cattle Market would increase from £6.00 to £12.00, a 100% increase; a 2 hour stay at Chester Street car park would increase from 20p to 60p, a trebling of the charge. Recreation Road and Dunstall Close car parks would see charges introduced for the first time.

Conservative Transport Spokesman Councillor Richard Willis said, "I am horrified that Labour are trying to sneak through such big changes in the current charging regime without any consultation or scrutiny. To seek to use the delegated powers of Council Officers to get this through under our noses is unacceptable. I have therefore asked for this decision to be called in for proper scrutiny and debate at Cabinet where Lead Councillors can be held accountable."

The "Call in" has been supported by Councillors Andrew Cumpsty and David Stevens.
