The Reading and District Branch of the Alzheimer's Society held their annual Memory Walk on Saturday 5 September in Linear Park in Calcot. The walk, which is the Society's flagship fundraising event, aimed to raise both awareness about the work of the Alzheimer's Society's as well as funds which are spent locally to help people living with dementia have access to essential services in the area.

Alok Sharma, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Reading West, who was invited to inaugurate the event said: "As in previous years the 2009 Memory Walk was an extremely well organised and family-friendly event with wildlife experts accompanying the walkers and providing an extremely interesting commentary both on the wildlife and plants along the walk as well as the history of Linear Park."

Alok continued: "Having attended a number of the Society's local events, including 'Singing for the Brain', I know that the Reading and District Branch does fantastic work locally to help support people with dementia and I have a great deal of admiration for the dedication and caring approach demonstrated by the Reading Branch's professional and volunteer staff."

Peter Politzer, Chairman of the Reading and District Branch, commented: "We were delighted that around 30 people decided to join us on the walk and it has certainly helped to raise awareness of the Society's work as well as funds which will be used locally to support those with dementia. Our thanks to all those who took part this year and we look forward to an even more successful local walk next year."

Peter continued: "Around 700,000 people suffer from dementia in the UK and as the population ages that number will rise to over one million by 2025. Sadly 1 in 3 people over 65 die with dementia and currently there is no cure for this condition. The Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them. The Society's fight for a better world for people with all types of dementia takes a wide range of forms and if anyone wants to know more about our work please visit www.alzheimers.org.uk or if you would like to volunteer to help us locally get in touch on 0118 9571183.”
