Safe road crossing on Dee Road - Success

The issue:

Parents of children at English Martyrs Catholic Primary School and St Michael’s Primary School expressed concern about speeding traffic on Dee Road and want a pedestrian crossing installed outside the schools.

Achievements to date:

  • Alok supported a petition launched by local parent Emma Simpson-Holland calling on the council to install a pedestrian crossing.

  • Alok helped to publicise a public meeting held on Thursday 8 January 2015. The Leader of Reading Borough Council was invited to the meeting to provide an opportunity for parents and local residents the opportunity to try to persuade Reading Borough Council to install a crossing.

  • Alok organised a further meeting with Reading Borough Council and representatives from both schools to discuss proposals to help improve road safety – including getting flashing warning lights working and recruiting a lollypop person.

  • Reading Borough Council agreed to install two zebra crossings on Dee Road

  • Work began to install two zebra crossings on Dee Road on 10 August 2015, ahead of the new school year starting in September.

Next steps:

Alok will continue to assist local parents who want to keep their children safe.

Alok says:

“I am delighted that after campaigning on this issue with local parents for many months that we have secured such a great result. A big thank you and congratulations to local parent Emma Simpson-Holland who did a superb job leading this campaign. There do however continue to be similar concerns at a number of other schools across the town and I will continue to work will local parents to help make their journeys to school safer.”
