Alok Sharma, the Member of Parliament for Reading West, last week joined the employees of Sainsbury’s Calcot to run a mile for Sport Relief.

Alok was invited to run with Sainsbury’s Chief Executive, Justin King when he visited the Calcot store in Reading on Friday. Justin King ran 32 miles at 32 stores between the 14 and 17 March. By the end of Justin’s challenge he had run with 1,000 of his colleagues, including one representative from every Sainsbury’s store in the country.

Alok Sharma said: “This is an excellent initiative by Sainsbury’s locally and I certainly enjoyed the run. It was good to speak to Justin King while we ran about local employment issues and the retail sector. I would like to congratulate Sainsbury’s for the part they have played in raising money for Sport Relief.”

Speaking before the event Justin King said: "Our colleagues really do go the extra mile for Sport Relief so it will be a pleasure to run with them. In 2010, our customers and colleagues helped us raise a massive £5.4 million for Sport Relief and with the great fundraising activities many of our stores already have planned, we're hoping to go the extra mile to try and beat that target this year."

Katherine How, Sport Relief Sponsorship Manager at Sainsbury's, added: "Projects across the country will benefit from Sport Relief fundraising including Justin's challenge. In such a landmark year for sport, we hope our customers can support our fundraising efforts and have fun in the process. The campaign gives us the opportunity not just to transform lives in some of the world's poorest countries but also a means of helping our local community."
