Reading West MP Alok Sharma attended the League of Friends of the Royal Berkshire Hospital fete held in Victoria Park in Tilehurst on Saturday 11th June and met with stall holders and visitors to the show.

Alok also dropped in on representatives of the Tilehurst Area Community First Responder Scheme (CFR) who were manning the ambulance on display. The Community Responder Scheme has been set up by the South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust (SCAS) to help save lives within the local community. Volunteers receive training and resuscitation equipment from SCAS and are supported by a team of clinical and administrative staff who are dedicated to the development of these invaluable schemes.

Local volunteer and Tilehurst CFR co-ordinator Paul Hughes said: “We were at the show to promote the CFR scheme and also to publicise the South Central Ambulance Service’s bid to become an NHS Foundation Trust. The Tilehurst scheme is manned by professionally trained local volunteers who respond immediately to life threatening 999 calls in Tilehurst. Our volunteers live and respond from within the community meaning that we often reach the patient first and begin treatment whilst an ambulance is en-route. We are just one of many such schemes across Berkshire and the country, and in the last 18 months we have responded to over 500 callouts in the Tilehurst area.”

Philippa Kay, SCAS Communications Officer, said: “SCAS is seeking to become an NHS Foundation Trust and are looking for people to sign up to become members and support their local ambulance service. As members, people from our community will be able to find out more about their ambulance service, have their say and help to shape how 999 emergency healthcare is delivered locally. Those interested in becoming members can visit www.southcentralambulance.nhs.uk email getinvolved@scas.nhs.uk or call our Membership Officer on 01869 365 000.”

Reading West MP Alok Sharma said: “Many thanks to Paul and Jess for showing me one of the new ambulances which are based in Reading, and talking me through all the equipment on board. The Tilehurst volunteers provide an invaluable service for the local community and I understand that all the Community First Responder Schemes are self-funding so they deserve local support. Some local businesses have been particularly helpful, and well done to the Village Butchers in Tilehurst Triangle who recently raised £1,130 for the Tilehurst CFR scheme by taking part in a sponsored marathon.”
