Reading West MP Alok Sharma made an early start to visit Royal Mail’s West Reading delivery office based in Loverock Road on Friday 3rd December to see how local postmen and women deal with the increase in mail in the run-up to Christmas.

Alok was given a tour of his local delivery office by Julie Pringle, Delivery Sector Manager, who showed Alok how the different types of mail and packages are dealt with by the delivery office. Julie described how items are prepared for delivery and spoke of the benefits of the use of Postal Digital Assistant devices in delivery rounds, which enable postmen and women to obtain an electronic signature for items that require written proof of delivery.

During the tour, Alok had the chance to speak to a number of the 94 postmen and women who are responsible for delivering mail to over 31,700 addresses in West Reading. Amongst those Alok spoke to were Julian Bradford and Dave Fostekew who were sorting the mail into the correct order for delivery.

Alok said: “I was very happy to visit the Royal Mail delivery office in West Reading and speak with some of the postmen and women about their work and the increased load in the lead-up to Christmas. Our local postmen and women deserve thanks for all their hard work in ensuring that the residents of West Reading receive their mail, especially over the busy Christmas period.”

Julie commented: “We were delighted that Alok was able to join us to see for himself what it takes to run a delivery office. It’s great that our local MP has taken an interest, and I’m sure that our postmen and women enjoyed the opportunity to tell Alok about their work.”

Julie added: “Remember, if you want to post any cards and presents for delivery before Christmas, the last recommended posting date is Tuesday 21st December for First Class mail.”
