14 September 2015
Alok Sharma, the Member of Parliament for Reading West, on Friday 11th September 2015, formally opened The Wren School and spoke on the occasion.

The Wren School opened its doors for the first time to Year Seven pupils on Monday 7th September 2015 in temporary accommodation and will eventually have 1,176 pupils ranging from Year 7 to 6th Form.

Alok, who is Patron of The Wren School, played a key role in ensuring The Wren School was given permission from the Government to open as a new Free School and to help secure the former Elvian School site as the location for the new school.

Alok has spoken out in Parliament in favour of the new school and held dozens of meetings with Government officials, the local authority and the owners of the former Elvian School site to help secure the location on a temporary basis, ahead of a formal planning application to build a permanent school on the site.

Alok Sharma said: “I am absolutely thrilled that after almost three years of hard work The Wren School is now open. It has not been the easiest of journeys and I pay tribute to everyone who has been involved with Wren and has helped to secure the right school, on the right site. The Wren team are some of the nicest and most dedicated people I have ever had the pleasure to meet and each and every one of them is absolutely passionate about one thing: delivering an outstanding education at the heart of the local community.”

Alok continued: “I very much hope that the former Elvian School site now becomes Wren’s permanent home and that Reading Borough Council will look favourably on the forthcoming planning application for the site.”

Speaking on behalf of the Wren School Trust, Nils Franke said: “The official opening of the Wren School by its Patron, Alok Sharma MP, was a tremendous moment for all concerned. So many people have put their trust in the vision for this school, the staff, pupils, parents and the wider local community. Now firmly established off the Bath Road, I look forward to the school securing its permanent home on the grounds of the former Elvian School.”
