New investment with renewed First Great Western franchise welcomed

3rd October 2013

Commenting on the announcement that First Great Western has signed an agreement with the Department for Transport to continue operating the Great Western Mainline franchise until 20th September 2015, Reading West MP Alok Sharma said: “I welcome the certainty this announcement brings together with the boost for local services and more investment.

Alok continued: “I am particularly pleased that FGW is planning for additional standard class capacity on its high speed trains which is something I have called for in Parliament and also taken up directly with FGW. It is also good news that FGW is working with the DfT to provide further improvements including a fleet of electric trains for the Thames Valley.”

Alok concluded: “This franchise will also allow a detailed discussion to continue on the introduction of smart ticketing which I have also called for and will ultimately benefit many of my commuting constituents.”
