Alok Sharma, Member of Parliament for Reading West, recently attended a Make It Your Business (MIYB) launch seminar alongside some of Reading’s female entrepreneurs. Alok was invited to the seminar by Alison Cork, founder of MIYB, who is an entrepreneur, author and broadcaster and runs a successful home interiors business, Alison at Home.
MIYB is a nationwide initiative and part of the The National Women’s Enterprise Network, a not-for-profit organisation founded by Alison, which aims to encourage and support women to start their own business. MIYB run events all over the country, where women can meet established local female entrepreneurs, learn from their experiences and network with other local aspiring female entrepreneurs, in an informal environment.
Alok was asked to open the event with a speech where he hailed the contribution of entrepreneurs to the national and local Reading economy. He encouraged those attending to also support each other in their individual journeys of setting up a successful business.
Panellists speaking at the event about their experiences of running their own businesses included: Kathryn Fell (who is the local MIYB champion) of Kathryn Fell Photography, Irene Dallas of Dallas & Co Solicitors, Suzanne Mountain, a Coach and Consultant and Sarah Keeley, Producer of House of Bluebelle.
Alok said: “I was delighted to be invited to this brilliant event. A huge thanks to Alison and our panellists as well as all those attending for being part of an inspirational evening. I look forward to continuing to work with MIYB.”
Alison Cork said: “It was fantastic to meet Reading’s female entrepreneurs and a big thanks to Alok for giving up his Friday evening to be with us. I never cease to enjoy hearing our entrepreneurs’ inspirational stories. I have a feeling that the Reading chapter of MIYB is going to be a huge success.”
