Alok Sharma, Member of Parliament for Reading West visited the Whitley Community Café on Friday 23rd March.
The Whitley Community Café is run by the Whitley Community Development Association who run sustainable local projects with the aim of empowering local residents. Mr Sharma was delighted to be shown around the café and hear about the project by Trisha Bennett, Community Development Coordinator.
The café is one of the sustainable projects run by the Whitley Community Development Association and is a place for people to find refuge, support or even a place for people to relax and enjoy a cup of tea or cake. At the end of each year, all surpluses are covenanted to the charity providing even greater sustainability through keeping money local.
Mr Sharma enjoyed speaking with the volunteers and hearing about their work within the local community as well as their aims for the future.
Alok Sharma MP said: “I was delighted to visit Whitley Community Café and hear about the valuable contribution that the Whitley Community Development Association make to the local area through sustainable projects like the café and I look forward to continuing a constructive dialogue.”
Trisha Bennett said: “It was great that Alok took the time to visit us and find out more about the positive impact that Big Local funding is having through the efforts of Whitley Community Development Association and its partners in Whitley. Longer term funding makes a huge difference for community groups and with the Cafe and Social Club as a key focus for community engagement and development activity, we are now seeing some positive long term impact including local volunteering and employment opportunities and provision of a range of learning experiences.”
