Help for Pensioners and Savers

Help for Pensioners and Savers

Alok Sharma, with Conservative Pensions Spokesperson, Theresa May MP, launched a petition calling on the Government to help pensioners and savers in the 2009 Budget.

Alok said: “Given that Gordon Brown has robbed billions each year from our pension funds, it is hardly surprising that he has failed to adopt our proposals to help pensioners.”

The petition called on Gordon Brown to abolish income tax on savings for basic rate tax payers and to raise the pensioners’ allowance by £2,000 to £11,490. We proposed that the package be paid for by reducing the growth in Government spending by £5 billion and so instead of rising by £30 billion this year, the increase would be £25 billion whilst ensuring that spending on the NHS is increased.

Sadly Labour failed to listen. Alok commented: "Given that Gordon Brown has robbed billions each year from our pension funds, it is hardly suprising that he has failed to adopt our proposals to help pensioners."
