EU Treaty Referendum Campaign

Alok Sharma launched a local campaign in 2007 calling on the Labour Government to honour its 2005 manifesto commitment to give the British people a referendum on the Treaty.

Alok said: "The new EU Treaty, which transfers significant powers to Brussels, is over 90% similar to the rejected EU constitution proposed earlier. The Irish have given a clear NO to the Treaty in their recent referendum and if Gordon Brown has any interest in listening to the people we must be allowed to have our say as well."

Sadly both Labour and the Liberals voted against a referendum despite their 2005 manifesto commitments.
